BHStars Awards 2020 — Who’s Going to the Finals?

One of our area’s biggest celebrations of the hospitality, tourism and retail industries is back again. Who’s in to win in the 2020 BHStars Awards?

It’s the time of year where we talk about the BHStars Awards. That’s the awards ceremony honouring the skills and achievements of those in the hospitality, tourism and retail industries in the BH postcodes. Three sectors that we at HQB Media feel very strongly about supporting.

In association with ROUTEpr, a PR agency based in Wimborne, the BHStars Awards first launched in 2018. In last year’s ceremony, a few familiar faces made it to the finals and some even emerged victorious. Coastal Comedy (fronted by founder Adrienne Coles) took home the Night Time Award, and Kamil Skalczyński of Art Sushi was nominated for Dining Experience of the Year. Not only that, both received nominations in the Rising Star category too!

So, the question remains — who has made the 2020 BHStars finals? Allow us to show off a few familiar faces for this year.

Returning Stars

Chef and creator of Art Sushi Kamil Skalczynski

We mentioned chef and Art Sushi founder Kamil Skalczyński already. While not nominated in the same categories as last year, he made the finals for two different awards for 2020. This year, Kamil is up personally for Chef of the Year, while his brand Art Sushi has received a nod for the Education and Mentoring Award. Last year, the chef, who was named an advisor of the World Sushi Skills Institute, taught a course in sushi techniques at the WhitePepper Chef Academy and Cookery School in Poole. He has since gone on to teach private sushi courses with tasting sessions.

SALT Cø founder Christian Ørner is a private chef and chocolatier

One who escaped our notice last year was another chef – Christian Ørner, who we interviewed recently. At the 2019 BH Stars Awards, he and his brand SALT Cø received nominations in three categories. He was actually up against Kamil for Dining Experience of the Year, and took home bronze awards for both Chef of the Year and New Business.

This year, he returns to two of those — Dining Experience and Chef of the Year. Meanwhile, SALT Cø has also reached the finals for Learning Experience of the Year.

Other Honourable Mentions

One category we failed to mention last year was the Mix Masters Award, honouring the best in cocktail making in the area. Rather unsurprisingly, Jamie Barter – bar manager of Drgnfly Pan-Asian Restaurant in Ashley Cross – is among the finalists this year. Other potential winners include the equally-skilled Ashley Barnett of Renoufs in Westbourne, Joshua Green from Chaplin’s and Jack Quinney at Be At One.

Smugglers Cove Adventure Golf is running a Halloween special this half termIn the New Business of the Year category, BHStars welcomes several brands and companies that have made a massive splash in the area. One of them is the Smugglers Cove Adventure Golf, which quickly proved a popular pier-side venue since it opened in July 2019. Joining them are businesses such as the Westbourne sustainability shop Almond & Co., and the vegan restaurant Twelve Eatery. The latter made history last year as the first vegan restaurant to hit the #1 spot on TripAdvisor.

The 2020 BHStars finals are at the Poole’s Lighthouse Theatre on 29th March.
