Kylie Keating, Founder: Intuitive Meals Ltd.

Intuitive Meals Ltd. represents a gap in the market – healthy food for young children. Processed meals that lack nutrients are almost all we can buy from supermarkets, but not to worry, Kylie has you covered…

Kylie Keating is a mother on a mission to change the way that parents are feeding their children in Bournemouth. Her self-made start-up, Intuitive Meals Ltd., is all about inspiring veganism in the young. Kylie’s fresh kids meals are delicious and made for young children, delivered to the home in fully recyclable packaging. The food is totally organic and home-made. So it does not have preservatives or as much salt in it, as Kylie told us.

Her business is awesome and innovative. Exemplifying an eco-focused mindset that more businesses should be adopting, to make less of an impact on the environment.

The meals are affordable, varied and can be bought through social media. Kylie hopes to expand her business once the lockdown ends, to reach out to a bigger market. But her unique business is a great example of the kind of healthy promotion for young people that this society seems to lack. Taking the issue of healthy eating into her own hands, Kylie spoke with us about what motivates her to inspire a shift in parents’ attitudes towards their children’s diets…

ARE YOU FROM THE BOURNEMOUTH AREA?

I’m from Bournemouth originally, but I’ve lived in a few other countries and cities working or nannying. London, Cyprus, Turkey and Greece. Before I started this business, I was a childminder for two years and, before that, nannying for seven years, which I loved. So I know lots about fussy eaters and how to get kids to eat.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS, INTUITIVE MEALS LTD.

My business is freshly frozen vegan meals for children. All the meals are made by me at home. I make five different meals: “Chilli sin carne” and rice; spaghetti and five-veg tomato sauce; lentil dhal and rice; vegetable curry and rice; and pesto and pasta, with grated courgettes and peas. All the packaging is recyclable, which is important to me too.

HOW DID THIS BUSINESS COME ABOUT? WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION?

I got into plant-based food after I had my first child. So over four years ago. But I’ve never really eaten meat or much dairy. All the meals I make are the same meals I make for my family, so I thought I’d start to make a bit extra.

I’ve always done batch cooking. It’s perfect for when you have a busy day with the kids, or if you want to eat later than the kids. They can have these meals and you can be happy they’ve had a tasty and nutritious home-cooked meal.

WHAT IS IMPORTANT ABOUT THE TYPE OF SERVICE YOU PROVIDE?

I’m very passionate about the meals because they’re the same meals we eat. All the food you eat from the shops just taste of preservatives, or are full of salt, which is horrible. I don’t want my kids to eat that.

WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS FOR INTUITIVE MEALS LTD.?

My next steps are to advertise more and add two different meals to the menu. I’ve been testing them out on my family, so they’re the guinea pigs. My husband was the biggest meat eater before, but now he’s a vegetarian and doesn’t realise it. He loves all the meals I make.

A lot of my meals are vegan by accident. If you take meat out of a curry or a chilli, it’s vegan. Sometimes I add cheese or yoghurt to my meals so they’re not always vegan. Just whatever we fancy each time.

WHY HAVE YOU CHOSEN TO MAKE VEGAN FOOD?

I’ve chosen to make vegan food because that’s what I eat a lot of the time. And it’s what I enjoy cooking — I’m passionate about it. The world would be better off if we ate more plants and less meat and dairy. I love eating healthy food and want my kids to eat healthily too. Teaching them about good food is important. They need to know about the balance of good and bad foods.
