Kate Liana Green, Creator: Liana’s Kitchen

Plenty of people have sought to improve their cooking skills whilst stuck at home over the past year, and that’s a trend Kate Liana Green, the creator of cooking blog Liana’s Kitchen, has capitalised on. The mother-of-three, whose love of cooking was inspired by making fresh and healthy recipes for her kids, aims to help people create something special in their kitchens with her blog…

Our next influencer story is based around Kate Liana Green, creator of popular cooking blog Liana’s Kitchen. She’s the owner of a platform that boasts a following of 1,600 (and growing) on Pinterest alone. We chatted to her about her blog, her love of cooking, and what she’s been getting up to over lockdown…

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START LIANA’S KITCHEN?

I fell into creating a food blog. My dream was to be a travel writer and so I was experimenting with learning how to self-publish a book on Amazon. I decided to make my first book a recipe book, as I had just received a smoothie maker for Christmas and had made enough recipes to share already. I didn’t expect the project to do anything other than teach me the process of writing, formatting and publishing a book, enabling me to then go on and publish a travel book.

It came as a huge surprise when that book, and subsequent recipe books, kept topping the Amazon bestseller charts. I started to get lots of emails from readers who had purchased my books asking me a variety of questions and so I thought, “Why not share the answers publicly in blog format?”

I had used my middle name (Liana) and my maiden name (Green) as a pen name for my first recipe book and it just stuck. Hence the name “Liana’s Kitchen”.

WHAT INSPIRED YOUR LOVE OF COOKING?

Before having my first son at the age of 28, I was more of a ready meal and takeaway kind of a girl. It’s fair to say I wasn’t known for my cooking skills! Having children (I have three sons now) inspired me to make fresh and healthy food. And so I began to teach myself to cook from scratch; the main goal being that the recipes were simple to make.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE RECIPE SO FAR? HAVE YOU FOUND THAT RUNNING LIANA’S KITCHEN HAS MADE YOU EXPERIMENT MORE WITH YOUR COOKING?

I’m not sure if I have one particular favourite recipe, but I do love anything spicy, so it would probably be one of my curried soups.

Yes, running a blog has made me experiment more with cooking – we eat a much wider variety of foods and are much more adventurous than we probably would be otherwise.

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO OVER LOCKDOWN? DO YOU THINK MORE PEOPLE ARE TURNING TO COOKING NOW THEY’RE SPENDING SO MUCH TIME INDOORS?

During lockdown, I have been making even more recipes. And as my children have been home too, they have been able to get more involved. At least with the eating part!

I’m in the middle of preparing another recipe book for sale – this one is on slow cooker recipes. I also helped my sister, who is local to the area, to start a travel site called “Caravan Sleeps”, which promotes caravans for rent and sale. I have a feeling that staycations will be booming when everything opens back up!

In the first lockdown last March, I saw a huge increase in traffic to my blog, mainly for baking recipes. It tailed off quite quickly though, and I am now back to regular levels – I think the novelty wore off.

YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A “KITCHEN GADGET GEEK”. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE GADGET TO USE IN THE KITCHEN?

Yes, I am a sucker for gadgets in the kitchen – anything that makes my life easier! My favourite is my soup maker, which I use all the time. But a close second would be the Ninja Foodi, which is a multicooker that can slow cook, air fry, pressure cook and dehydrate.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR LIANA’S KITCHEN? AND WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR 2021?

I plan to keep on growing the blog and release more recipe books. I would also love to start a cooking channel on YouTube if time allows! At the moment, I’m trying to learn some food photography skills to help me improve the images on my blog. The problem is as soon as I make something, I want to eat it. I don’t have the patience to get the perfect shot. It’s something I’m working on.
