Joshua Simons, Co-Founder: Chicken & Blues

Street food was becoming quite a big thing in London. And a friend of mine who used to run one of our restaurants had moved back there, and he was always telling about these really cool, specialist street food vendors. Popping up into shops, doing one thing really well; whether that's burgers or pizza or whatever. So I went up there and had a look, and realised there was a distinct lack of high-quality barbeque chicken in Bournemouth and Poole. You had what you might deem your lower-quality, regular fried chicken, and Nando's, which is more your dine-in chicken restaurant. An opportunity arose to take a shop with a few friends, and Chicken & Blues was born...

Sailing coach, yachtswoman, and journalist Pip was inspired to enter the race by the fact that more men have walked on the moon than women have completed the Vendée Globe...

Quidditch – The Community Magic in the South West

Still relatively new to the sporting world, Quidditch has become a popular growing sport in the UK, with the first official UK Quidditch team being founded in 2012. As explained on the Quidditch UK website, Quidditch consists of two teams playing against each other to score points; whichever team scores the most wins. Like the Harry Potter series, players must keep a broom (a PVC pipe) between their legs when playing...

Harvey Platt, Founder: My Fitness Advisor

I have always wanted to do something for myself. There has always been a burning urge. I remember going to an assessment day for a large investment bank. My degree is in Economics, and that is the standard route you go down -- either into investment banking or data analysis. And I just didn't enjoy it. It wasn't right for me. I thought, "This isn't something that I can get along with in the future". I think that was the catalyst that made me think, "I need to do something for myself"...

Steve Hawker, Creator: Big Bear Photography

Taking advantage of the eye-catching Bournemouth beaches, Steve's work stems from his passion for nature, the outdoors, and its artistic interpretation. "I've always lived by the sea, and I love outdoors. If I'm on a walk, I like to see what's about in nature or wildlife," Steve explained. "I don't use a camera to take photos. Most people are quite surprised that I use only my phone. I have my phone all the time, and it's easy to get a quick snap..."

Brandon Moss, Photographer

Since starting my business, I have taken most of my inspiration from modern lifestyle, and contemporary art and music. This led me to specialise mainly in portrait photography. This was the initial interest to start a business. Turning a part time hobby into a full time job. However, more recently, I have started to branch out to offer commercial advertising photography for products, interiors and architecture, travel, and so on...

Cliff Towler, Artist / Founder: Creative Studios

The Poole-born artist never intended to choose a creative vocation. In his teenage years he worked an apprenticeship in a local silk screen printer shop. “I enjoyed it there, and I would have continued learning the skills. But unfortunately the business closed down and I had to reconsider my career,” he said. He chose to study illustration, life drawing and art history at the Arts University Bournemouth. “In the '70s, it was a very vibrant way to earn money. I could be creative and work on a variety of commercial projects. Being creative is not enough. You have to think how to earn a living,” Cliff said.

Jamie Webb, Videographer & Photographer

Ever since I was 14 or 15, I wanted to set up my own media company. And I went to college to specialise in media. I made the bold decision to make an Instagram account. Just wanted to get my work out there to as many people as I possibly could. The more work I did, the more it progressed and I built a bit of a following. And then I registered it as a business - JKW Media - which was followed by my getting more clients...
